This book is the result of the collective work of a group of St.Petersburg scholars – all faculty members of the Department of Asian and African Studies, St.Petersburg State University, Russia, and is meant to offer a new conceptual approach to Asian and African Studies as a complex integrating field of knowledge. Among other scholarly disciplines, Oriental Studies occupies an exceptional place, being not only the oldest, but also most deeply developed.
